On 31 October 2023, the FASFC published a new version of the circular on disinfecting tools using a method other than hot water in slaughterhouses, cutting plants and establishments producing minced meat, meat preparations and mechanically separated meat.

What does this new publication cover?

Among other things:

  • The conditions for deviating from interim cleaning and disinfection.
  • Clarification of the details on the application description of biocidal products.

What other disinfection methods can be applied?

As a producer, you have 3 options:

  1. Application of an alternative method approved at sector level.
  2. Application, on an individual basis, of a method assessed by an independent scientific body.
  3. Submission of your own sufficiently substantiated dossier.

What must this own dossier contain?

  • The results of a trial setup comparing the effectiveness of disinfection with hot water of at least 82°C with the proposed alternative method.
  • The scope of application.
  • An exact description of the procedure to be applied.
  • An explanation of any drawbacks of the method.
  • The effectiveness of the chosen method must be demonstrated on an ongoing basis through analyses.

How does the circular help with compliance?

The circular clarifies, among other things, which standards must be applied to continuously demonstrate the effectiveness of the method used. It also sets out which measures can and must be taken if a result is non-compliant.
