Certification according to ISO 22002 demonstrates that your company implements the right hygiene, infrastructure and process management measures. Some changes were published in July 2025. This blog discusses the changes through the questions below:

  • What is the ISO 22002 standard?
  • Who does the new standard apply to?
  • What are the main changes compared to the previous version?
  • From when do the new standards take effect?

New ISO 22002 standard: what's changing for you?

What is the ISO 22002 standard?

The ISO 22002 standards describe the prerequisite programmes (PRPs) that safeguard food safety in companies. These PRPs form the basis or the food safety management system, such as ISO 22000 or FSSC 22000.

The new structure consists of two documents

  • ISO 22002-100: the general, chain-wide PRP requirements for food, animal feed and packaging.
  • ISO 22002-1 to 6: production-specific requirements per sector.

Specific sectors in the food chain each have their own PRP requirements. ISO 22002-100 forms the basis for this.

  • ISO 22002-1 for food production: PRPs for food producers and processors.
  • ISO 22002-2 for catering: requirements for establishments that prepare and serve food, such as restaurants and care institutions.
  • ISO 22002-3 for agriculture: guidelines for primary production, including arable farming, livestock farming and fisheries.
  • ISO 22002-4 for packaging production: PRPs for producers of food packaging, focused on material safety and hygiene.
  • ISO 22002-5 for transport and storage: requirements for logistical activities in the food chain, such as temperature control and hygiene in storage facilities.
  • ISO 22002-6 for animal feed production: PRPs for the production and processing of animal feed and ingredients.
  • ISO 22002-100 for general PRPs: these are new since July 2025 and contain the chain-wide basic rules for all sectors.

Who does the new standard apply to?

ISO 22002 applies to organisations within food, feed & packaging that:

  • Base their food safety management system on ISO 22000 or FSSC 22000.
  • Want to demonstrate that they comply with the international requirements for PRPs

What are the main changes compared to the previous version?

The old ISO 22002 combined all PRPs in a single document. In the new version, the PRPs have been split up. There have also been content additions made and tightening measures implemented.

We list the main changes to ISO 22002-1 below:

  • New structure: general requirements in ISO 22002-100 and production-specific requirements in ISO 22002-1/2/3/4/5/6.
  • Drainage and layout: drainage pipes not positioned above production lines, drainage flow always from clean to dirty.
  • Water management: requirements for residual chlorine levels, pipework must be disinfectable.
  • Bulk receiving points: to be identified, closed off and locked, and only unloaded after approval.
  • Contamination prevention: chemical contamination is now named separately, stronger allergen control (airflow management, PPE, vending machines, rework rules).
  • Cleaning and disinfection: post-clean and pre-start-up inspections mandatory, CIP procedures are more detailed.
  • Food defence and food fraud: are now both a mandatory part of PRPs.
  • Rework: more extensive traceability and control conditions.
  • Waste management: in addition to disposal, reuse and recycling are also included.

From when do the new standards take effect?

The new standards were published in July 2025. From the official effective date, as determined by certification schemes such as FSSC 22000, all audits will need to be carried out in accordance with the new standards. That date is not yet known, but the new standards are expected to become fully mandatory for certified organisations during the course of 2025.
