An identification mark on a food product of animal origin is an essential element within the European Union's food safety legislation. It ensures traceability, control and compliance with hygiene requirements.
What are identification marks?
An identification mark is an oval-shaped stamp (usually in black) on packaged products or labels. This stamp provides information about the product.
- Country code: for example BE for Belgium
- Approval number of the establishment (for example slaughterhouse, processing plant…)
- From 1 January 2029, the abbreviation ‘EU’ will be mandatory instead of ‘EC’
What is changing and why?
Delegated Regulation (EU) 2024/1141 of 12 June 2024 stipulates that the abbreviation ‘EC’ (European Community) in identification marks must be replaced by ‘EU’ (European Union). This change ensures that the current name of the European Union is also reflected correctly in the legislation.
When does the change take effect?
A transition period gives operators time to adapt their labelling without unnecessary administration. The transition period runs until 31 December 2028 inclusive. Products that received the ‘EC’ label before that date may still remain on the market.
From 1 January 2029 , all products of animal origin from the European Union must carry an identification mark with the abbreviation ‘EU’. This may be in any of the official languages of the European Union: EC, EU, UE, EE, AE, ES or EÚ.
