Packaging and packaging waste regulation (PPWR)

The PPWR is the new European regulation on packaging and packaging waste, published on 11 February 2025. As a regulation, it replaces the outdated 1994 directive and imposes, for the first time, binding obligations on all economic operators in the chain, from manufacturer to distributor.

The regulation affects every company that uses, produces or places packaging on the market. It includes strict requirements on composition, recyclability, minimisation, reuse and labelling, with concrete deadlines up to 2040.

Wim Geeraerts obtained his PhD in bio-engineering sciences in 2020. After his career at Fevia, he joined AMNorman in 2023 to strengthen the packaging team. Here he follows up on both food safety and sustainability legislation. He also supports the quality departments of food and packaging companies.
