food safety

In order to guarantee the safety of our animal-based food such as meat, eggs and
dairy there is a lot of legislation and certification standards on animal feed. This way
contaminations and diseases in the chain and on our plates are avoided.

animal feed self-control guide

Every operator in the animal feed industry must be sure that the marketed products
comply with the legal requirements regarding food safety and traceability. Because of
this companies are obliged to apply the self-control principles. The self-control
guides are composed by the sector federations. For the animal feed sector the
G-001 guide was developed by OVOCOM. Companies with a validated self-control
system can enjoy a discount on the FAVV contributions.

FCA

The FCA (Chain Alliance Standard) is managed by OVOCOM. It is the guideline for
companies in the animal feed sector and it is elaborated specifically by and for
professionals in the sector. The FCA standard is internationally recognized and is
also interchangeable with other animal feed safety standards such as GMP+,
FAMI-QS, FEMAS, GTAS and QS.

The FCA standard is audited by independent accredited certification bodies.

GMP+

Besides the FCA standard the GMP+ standard as well is often implemented. This
standard is also internationally recognized and is the biggest certification scheme for
animal feed in the world. The scheme is composed as follows:

  • Feed Safety Assurance (GMP+ FSA) for safe animal feed.
  • Feed Responsibility Assurance (GMP + FSA) for a sustainable way of working.

VLOG

VLOG stands for ‘Verband Lebensmittel Ohne Gentechnik’ or in Dutch
‘Voedingsmiddelen zonder GMO’s of genetisch gemodificeerde organismen’.
Producers who comply with the requirements are allowed to put the VLOG logo on
their packages, proving their products do not contain GMOs.

In order to get the certificate there are three important rules producers have to take into account:

  • There are no GMOs or parts of these present in the product.
  • There are no vitamins, flavors, enzymes or other nutritional additives present produced by using GMOs.
  • There is no GMO material present in the animal feed (this with very strict limits if the
animals were raised in the past with GMO-containing feed).

obtain a FCA certificate

AMNorman has Ovocom-federated consultants. They have the required experience
in the animal feed sector and their knowledge gets tested biyearly by means of an
exam organized by Ovocom.

No wonder these specialists are the perfect match for
support when implementing, maintaining and following up a quality system or
conducting an internal audit.
