What does SUP stand for?
SUP stands for single-use plastic. Plastic that is used only once and then thrown away. The SUPs placed on the market can be used in a very wide range of sectors. In addition, the production cost is very low and the time needed to produce them very short. However, we pay a very high price for these advantages. Nature, in particular, is the biggest victim of this production. This problem gave rise to the need to draw up a directive to reduce the negative effects on the environment.
SUP Directive
In June 2019, European Directive 2019/904, commonly known as the SUP Directive, was published. It requires EU member states to take certain measures, for example in the form of bans or obligations.
SUP Directive in Belgium
Although the deadline for European member states to transpose the SUP Directive into national legislation has passed, this directive has still not been implemented in Belgium to date. Some measures have already been transposed at both federal and regional level, but a great many measures are still work in progress and are causing confusion and discussion.
