IFS Logistics from version 2.3 to 3
In December 2023, IFS Logistics version 3 was published. Within this new publication, the logistics scope has been further expanded, with emphasis placed on risk management and customer focus. What does IFS Logistics involve?
IFS Logistics applies to all types of transport and storage services in the logistics chain, for both food and non-food products. It covers all logistics activities, such as loading, transport, unloading, storage, handling and further distribution of products.
What are the main changes?
The standard was written in accordance with the Codex Alimentarius, ISO 17065 and the GFSI benchmark, taking into account the requirements of ISO 22003-2. A number of updates in line with IFS Food Version 8, released in April 2023, include:
- A B score is once again considered a deviation, for which a corresponding action plan must be drawn up.
- A 'star status' is awarded when certification is achieved via an unannounced audit.
- The number of requirements has been reduced, although the removed requirements have often been merged into other requirements.
- The scope of the standard has been expanded with a specific focus on feed, along with the addition of two new services for logistics processing: simple sorting and/or labelling of fruit and vegetables.
- ‘Partially outsourced processes' are now included in the standard, under 4.2.4.
- Clear guidelines have been drawn up for the temporary storage/transport of containers, the organisation of logistics activities and rules regarding exceptions.
- More attention is being given to management responsibility and involvement.
- Finally, greater emphasis is placed on risk management for bulk transport and on customer satisfaction.
From when does IFS Logistics Version 3 take effect?
Certification to IFS Logistics version 3 is possible from 1 June 2024 and is mandatory from 1 December 2024.
What exceptions apply?
There is an exception for companies whose unannounced audit period begins on or after 1 June 2024: they are required to certify in accordance with version 3.
