In February 2024, IFS Broker version 3.2 was launched. This standard focuses on companies in the food industry and assesses the processes of intermediaries in the supply chain.

This blog answers the following questions:

  • What is IFS Broker certification?
  • Who does IFS Broker apply to?
  • What are the main changes compared to the previous version?
  • From when does IFS Broker version 3.2 come into effect?

What is IFS Broker certification?

Well-stocked shop shelves and a wide range of products to choose from. More than ever before, the global economy allows raw materials and products from various sources to be brought to market. Thanks to intermediaries and importers, businesses can offer these products on foreign markets.

The purpose of IFS certification is to assess whether a company is able to bring its products to market safely and legally.

This certificate is particularly relevant for businesses active in the food industry that supply retailers and wholesalers. IFS Broker is a standard recognised by the GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative).

An IFS Broker audit assesses whether the intermediary has implemented suitable processes for trading products safely and responsibly. These processes must ensure that the products from its suppliers comply with legal regulations and the product specifications of its customers.

Who does IFS Broker apply to?

Intermediaries

Individuals or businesses that act as an intermediary for others. They negotiate contracts and purchases or sales in exchange for a fee or commission.

Sales agents

Individuals or businesses authorised or appointed by a manufacturer to sell or distribute products in a specific territory. A sales agent acts on their own behalf, takes ownership of the goods and does not act as an intermediary for a principal.

Trader

Individuals or businesses that sell or exchange goods. They can do this through a shop, webshop or market.

Importer

Individuals or businesses that transport goods from another country to a place or country in order to sell them.

What are the main changes compared to the previous version?

The version change was introduced to provide greater transparency across the various IFS standards. The main changes are in line with the changes made to IFS Food version 8, which was released in April 2023, and IFS Logistics version 3, which was released in December 2023.

The changes mainly relate to the audit protocol and not to the audit requirements

  • The version change makes it easier to carry out combined audits.

  • A B score is once again considered a deviation, for which a corresponding action plan must be drawn up.

  • A 'star status' is awarded when certification is achieved via an unannounced audit.

From when does IFS Broker version 3.2 take effect?

Certification to IFS Broker version 3.2 is in effect from 1 July 2024. All audits carried out on or after this date must be conducted in accordance with IFS Broker version 3.2.
